Build A Sustainable Wardrobe with Cable & Co.

Ryunosuke Satoro once said “Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.”

Often, we feel that it is not worth going that extra mile to live a sustainable life, since how can one individual make a significant impact in the grand scheme of things? But, if every single individual on this planet played a part in living a sustainable life, then imagine the massive impact it would make!

This does not necessarily mean making drastic changes, but keeping things simple and doable in day-to-day life, such as avoiding food waste in your homes, eliminating littering, recycling as much as possible, and the like.

And, imagine if not only individuals went this extra mile, but many corporate industries as well.
In today’s blog, we will highlight a simple way for you to begin your journey towards sustainability, by building a sustainable wardrobe! As well as, highlighting the various ways that some of our amazing brands are taking a step towards going green.

1. Step 1: Evaluate and Donate

Have you ever stood in front of your wardrobe and thought, “I have nothing to wear”, even though there are racks and racks of clothes hanging in front of you?

We have all been there! But, this probably means that it is time for a good, clothing cleanse. Go through each item, one by one, and try to determine which items can be donated, and which items can perhaps be upcycled.

Remember, the purpose of this exercise is not to simply throw out your old wardrobe and buy a whole new one. After all, this will defeat the purpose of sustainability.

2. Step 2: Invest in Quality not Quantity

You may ask: how can spending more money mean living more sustainably?

Well, when you look at quality, you are making a long-term investment. Often, cheaper alternatives in the fashion industry lack durability, because this is a short-term cost-saving mechanism. However, this often means you will be replacing items and encouraging yourself to accumulate more.

Whereas, when you choose quality, sure, you might be spending a little bit more upfront, but it will last you longer, therefore working out to be the more sustainable option.

Additionally, having a few high-quality fashion items will help make it easier to mix and match your wardrobe. As opposed to buying various, outfit-specific pieces.

3. Research Green Brands

Knowledge is power, and even making the simple switch to greener brands is a great way to contribute towards sustainability.
Cat Footwear, for example, uses leather that is 100% traceable. This means that it is a byproduct of the food industry, thereby eliminating what would have been waste. Additionally, they only work with leather suppliers who are certified by The Leather Suppliers group, because this ensures that the industry as a whole, maintains good practices. In addition to this, Cat Footwear makes use of recycled materials as much as possible without compromising the durability of their footwear.

Moreover, Merrell Footwear is another one of our brands that is committed to lessening their carbon footprints. Many of their footwear designs make use of natural materials, such as cotton and wool, because these are environmentally friendly, renewable resources. Merrell also uses Responsible Down Standard (RDS) – certified down in their products, meaning that all down that is sourced does not come from animals that are subjected to unnecessary harm. In addition, Merrell has introduced various footwear designs that use recycled materials, such as their Moab Speed range and Moab Flight range.

4. Thrift Shop

Giving clothes a second chance is always a great way to decrease waste. Thrifting allows you to get new items, whilst donating whatever you do not use anymore.

Not to mention, thrifting is a fun day out, and often offers you amazing ‘one of a kind’ items at affordable prices. Furthermore, by encouraging thrifting, and second-hand shopping, you will play a role in decreasing the demand for new production, while also extending the life of existing garments.

Now that you have all the tips, it's time to begin building your very own sustainable wardrobe. Keep in mind that even the smallest step toward living a sustainable lifestyle counts for something. Change does not happen overnight, so start this journey gradually, tackling one shelf or clothing rack at a time. Finally, when it comes to investing in greener and durable footwear, head to your nearest Cable & Co. store, and let our friendly staff help you find exactly what you are looking for.
