Start Prioritising YOU
The 7th of April is recognised globally as World Health Day, and often each year the day is dedicated to specific illnesses that need more attention from the public.
However, this year, we at Cable & Co. would like to look at this in the broader sense and focus on prioritising your health and well-being.
Although social media may disagree, prioritising your health isn't always about taking luxurious bubble baths, indulging in sweet treats, or having a pampering day (though these are fun and recommended from time to time).
Prioritising yourself actually means trying to live a lifestyle that is manageable and healthy for you as an individual.
Tips For Living A Healthier Lifestyle
1. What Is Your Daily Routine?
Taking a look at your daily routine is such an important thing to do because often, we tend to get sucked into work life, parent life, and school life without stopping to think: am I happy?
Now, we are well aware that these things are unavoidable tasks, however, are you giving yourself enough time to breathe and take a moment for yourself? Over-committing to a myriad of tasks is guaranteed to lead to burnout.
Therefore, try and take the time to reflect on your daily routine, and think of ways to improve it, by scheduling enough relaxation time and even eliminating unnecessary stressors.
2. When Last Have You Had A Check-up?
Many of us tend to neglect this. Because it is easy to forget, especially since we only tend to head to the doctor when we notice that something is blatantly wrong. But, as we get older, it becomes more and more difficult to notice. Sometimes a simple ache or pain may seem like your regular everyday ageing effect, but it could also potentially be something else.
So, always ensure that you are going for regular check-ups. For those under 50, every two to three years is a good range, thereafter, getting a check-up annually is highly recommended.
3. Are You Doing Some Kind Of Exercise?
Physical movement is so important for your body! Especially for those whose jobs consist of sitting at a desk behind a computer every day.
Exercise does not always have to be some overly strenuous gym session where you are lifting heavy weights and sprinting up and down – unless, of course, you enjoy that type of activity.
Sometimes a session of gentle yoga, and even a brisk walk in your neighbourhood is exactly what you need.
4. Do You Sleep Enough?
This is a hot topic. Because, although some people feel that sleeping the recommended eight hours is overrated, it actually can affect your energy levels substantially. Not to mention, the quality of sleep you get also plays a large role.
The key to determining how much sleep you need is to take note of how you feel when waking up. If you do feel refreshed, then clearly that amount of sleep is perfect for you. If on the other hand, you find yourself struggling to wake up, or feeling sluggish, then this is an indicator that either you did not have enough sleep, or the quality of your sleep was not good.
5. Are You Considering Your Mental Health?
Why is it that when our wounds are visible on our body, then only do we seek help? Yet, when we are not doing well mentally, we pretend that it does not exist simply because it is not visible.
Mental health is such a crucial aspect of our overall well-being to consider. This means holding your lifestyle at arm's length and identifying the unnecessary stressors, unhealthy habits, and anything that may be causing your mental health harm. Additionally, it may be beneficial for you to see a mental health professional from time to time.
6. Do You Listen To Your Body?
Now, this question is referring to two different things.
Firstly, do you listen to your body when it comes to food? Are you paying attention to your cravings and what they could potentially be indicating? Practising healthy eating habits can have a positive effect on your energy levels, and mental sharpness. Trying out the newest trendy diet – that often includes starving yourself - so that you can lose a kg or two may not be the healthiest choice. Instead, practise listening to your body and what it needs.
Secondly, do your clothes make you feel good mentally and physically? There is certainly some truth to the saying, 'when we look good, we feel good'. Don't be afraid to wear an outfit that makes you feel confident and happy. In addition to this, ensure that you are comfortable for the day ahead! Something such as footwear can play an integral part in your body's physical health! Wearing footwear that does not provide proper support could potentially lead to joint pains, foot aches, and an overall sour mood.
